Project ADAM Heart Safe Schools

A Project ADAM Heart Safe School has successfully implemented a quality sudden cardiac arrest program of awareness, training and effective emergency response to promote a safe environment for students, visitors and staff as outlined within the Heart Safe School Checklist.

Among the Heart Safe Schools designation requirements are:

• Having an adequate number of AEDs on campus so that one can be reached in less than 3 minutes during a cardiac emergency.
• Training faculty and staff in hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and AED use.
• Establishing a Cardiac Emergency Response Team (CERT) representing 10 percent of employees.
• Writing a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP) to ensure rapid response to a cardiac arrest on school grounds.
• Conducting at least one drill per year to enhance familiarity, communication and coordination with local emergency medical services.
• Project ADAM presents each Heart Safe School with a banner and recognizes Heart Safe Schools on its website.

Once a school receives the Heart Safe School designation, Project ADAM helps maintain the status annually.
